A Bill In Support Of ASUC Sponsorship for First Language Creation Conference Authored by Senator A. Lin WHEREAS, This conference is to be the first serious conference about language creation, and the art, craft, & study thereof, in over a hundred years. It will include approximiately a dozen speakers and panelists, and last 1-2 days (April 22-23); and WHEREAS, The proposed speakers include a University of Rochester professor; some professors emerti of other universities; graduate students; and others. Their background is primarily linguistic, but includes other specialties as well, such as cognitive science, cognitive psychology, religious studies, computer science, and numerous other fields. The existing proposals for panel and lecture topics are diverse in perspective, application, and methods, and include for example a sociological look at language creators, a comparison of several competing theories of language syntax and their differing applications and implications, a talk on how to directly apply principles and cognitive structures learned from cognitive psychology; and WHEREAS, Language creation has historically been unfairly maligned in academic and other communities. This events aims to bring it back into the mainstream – and cutting edge – of academic thought, and will empower attendees (students, professors, community members, and others) to further their practice significantly. Furthermore, as an innovative, first-in-a-century event, this conference represents leadership on the part of the student organizers, and on the part of the language creation community as a whole, and will further encourage both to pursue leadership roles in all venues, both academic and social; and WHEREAS, The Budget will be provided to the committee; and RESOLVED, that the ASUC shall recognize First Language Creation Conference as an ASUC Sponsored event; be it further RESOLVED, that the ASUC shall allocate $3,900 (three thousand nine hundred dollars) from the Senate Contingency Fund to First Language Creation Conference.
